Maintenance / Surface /

Stabilisation

CORE MEANING:

What follows the damage is rarely healing.

Instead, the subject performs small acts of maintenance:

colour, gloss, pleasure, excess.

These gestures soften the surface of experience without removing what lies beneath.

CLINICAL DESCRIPTION:

A compensatory condition in which the subject attempts to stabilise previously accumulated damage through aesthetic, sensory, or pleasurable interventions.

New experiences do not erase the prior ones. They layer over them, altering texture rather than history.

SYMPTOMS:

-Use of pleasure, beauty, or stimulation to manage internal damage

-Maintenance behaviours rather than transformative ones

-Cycles of improvement followed by reappearance of underlying weight

Acceptance that repair remains incomplete

PROGNOSIS:

Healing does not occur. What emerges instead is maintenance.
